- In director Olivier Megaton's Transporter 3, mysterious courier Frank Martin (Jason Statham) is forced to transport Valentina (newcomer Natalya Rudakova), the kidnapped daughter of Leonid Vasilev (Jeroen Krabbé, a.k.a. That Eastern European Weasel from so many '80s and '90s films), the head of the Environmental Protection Agency for the Ukraine, from Marseilles to Odessa.
Frank's "employer" Johnson (Prison Break's Robert Knepper) guarantees his cooperation by fitting him with an explosive bracelet that will detonate should the Transporter venture more than 100 feet from his beloved car. But Johnson isn't the only one Frank has to worry about; there are also teams of armed agents out to intercept him. However, no one gives Frank more trouble than the hostage herself.
Valentina may be a spoiled child of privilege and a cynical party girl, and his code prevents him from getting involved with someone, but Frank soon finds himself falling for her. With only his old ally Inspector Tarconi (François Berléand) to lend a hand, Frank has to make sure that he and Valentina get to Odessa -- and then get out -- alive.
The Transporter was a dumb but fun action flick bolstered by the mystique of its hero and inventive action sequences that perfectly showcased Statham's badassery (no, that's not a real word but it works). The second one fell victim to the curse of most action sequels, which is to make action sequences and story elements bigger and more preposterous than before. But the worst thing about the watchable but forgettable Transporter 2 was that it wasn't a Transporter film; it was a half-baked Man on Fire retread and not a story about a cool man and his cool car.
