Biker Boyz is a strange proposition. On one hand, it's a wild, stunt-and-gear-heavy action story clearly aimed at the audiences who embraced The Fast and the Furious, substituting motorcycles for muscle cars. That said – and this is both the strength and the weakness of co-writer/director Reggie Rock Bythewood's film – it's also defiantly not very much like The Fast and the Furious in tone or style, choosing a much more serious-minded take than the intentionally over-the-top thrills of the earlier film. But it sometimes takes itself a little too seriously, which results in an odd conundrum: What are we to make of a movie that takes such a cheesy and ridiculous subject and then plays it pretty straight?

The plot – which has elements of Fast and the Furious, as well as Boyz in the Hood and even a bit of George Romero's Knightriders – focuses on a young man called Kid (Antwone Fisher's Derek Luke) whose involvment in motorcyle street racing leads to his attempt to best the undefeated "King of Cali" Smoke (Laurence Fishburne) for his helmet (in other words, this king's "crown"). It's a story that, for all of its adornments and edgy contemporary attitude, is as old as the "young cowboy who takes on the old gunslinger" concept from any number of Westerns.
